House of Afrodite “Thought I Wanted To Be” Mini-Series is where I document my progress to find a side hustle that will turn into a location independent gig. DISCLAIMER: The views and opinions expressed in this post are purely my own and should in no way influence your decision to enroll in this course.
As you know, I’m on a journey to find a side hustle that will allow me to eventually leave my corporate job. If you didn’t know, feel free to read all about it here. I do have to warn you that this was not my one and only attempt to find something.
This was not the one and only time I plunked down money for a program that captured my interest. At the time.
This isn’t called a mini-series for nothing.
In this post about The 10-Minute Workday, you’ll find out what I liked about this course, what I didn’t like, and the takeaway. This self-guided program will give you deep dive into the aspect of setting up and launching a 10-minute workday, no-client email business. This program is offered by American Writers and Artists, Inc (AWAI), the world’s leading provider of copy writing training programs since 1997.
If, like me, you’re looking for a side hustle and want to know if shelling out $2500 is right for you, I’ll get to that down below. But first, who the hell is Ben Settle and why should you trust him to help you earn extra income?
MEET YOUR HOST: Ben Settle
In his own words: Over the past 14 years I’ve written ads, created email campaigns, and cooked up marketing strategies for clients that have collectively earned tens of millions of dollars in sales in hyper competitive, “cut throat” markets such as:
My methods have also gotten rave reviews from the world’s top A-list copywriters & marketers. In addition, I’ve taught methods I’ve pioneered to some of the world’s most prestigious direct marketing companies — such as Agora Financial… AWAI’s Web Copywriting Intensive event & also their Wealthy Web Writer series… professional radio producers at Entercom (one of the largest radio broadcasting companies in the United States)… Real Dose’s (one of the world’s biggest and most respected health supplement companies) Health Profits Summit… various seminars and events where people pay up to $10k just for a seat… and the annual Oceans 4 Mastermind — where 7, 8, and 9 figure businesses pay me and my droogies to put their emails on the “hot seat” — transforming their sales overnight.
I publish a monthly print newsletter (called “Email Players”) that costs $97.00 per month and is read by 400+ people in over 30 countries — including by some of the most respected copywriters and marketers on the planet, including A-list copywriters, publishers at prestigious direct marketing companies like Agora Financial, leading auto-responder & email trainers, world class copywriters…and more.

WHY I THOUGHT I WANTED A 10-MINUTE WORKDAY
The idea of not having to pitch to clients really appealed to me. Before I’d even heard about this program, I was a subscriber of Ben’s newsletter. I was getting daily marketing tips that I’d like to think I would implement at a later time. He also has a paper newsletter that he puts out for $97/mo. I wasn’t about to pay that because the newsletters are entertaining enough.
They really are. They’re entertaining and informative and a few times he even made me laugh.
When I was reading his emails, I was imagining how he would sound. They read like a fast-talking, snarky guy from New York. LOL I don’t remember where he’s from, but that’s how I imagine he’d sound. His program intrigued me and he was “teaser” selling it in his daily emails. At the time, he was offering it at a special $997 through AWAI (as you can see in the intro, it’s now back at $2500), so I thought I’d try it. Since I had already gotten other programs through AWAI, I requested a payment plan.
I signed up for it on a Friday.
Suffered from Buyer’s Remorse a few hours later.
Then I promptly asked for a refund Monday morning.
WHAT I LIKED
- They offer a payment plan.
- Customer service. They respond promptly within 24-48 hrs.
- The information was published in 2017, so it’s pretty damn current
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Soooo, the fast-talking, snarky New York guy I was imagining in the emails? That tone carries over into the program and while it works well in the short emails, it didn’t work well in this format.
At least, not for me.
I could’ve watched the videos (then I would’ve actually gotten a chance to hear his voice), but I bypassed those for the transcripts instead. Which reinforced my decision to get a refund.
He would go off on tangents while explaining something, so sometimes the point got lost. I found myself trying to sift through what he was saying to get to the meat of the topic. It felt a little chaotic to me and I didn’t want to feel that frustration through the rest of the program.
Everyone learns differently. People have a different style of teaching. I remember Ben mentioning in his promo emails that this program wouldn’t be for everyone. His style of writing isn’t for everyone and he’s right. I like his emails, but his teaching style didn’t fit me.
I learned that I prefer an even mix of structure and conversational when it comes to self-paced courses and/or webinars.
I consider myself to be a visual learner, but not a visual learner. Meaning, I like tangible stuff I can look at and refer to later (worksheets, workbooks, tip sheets, etc.), but videos bore me. Unless it’s a tutorial. I can’t just be looking at your face and watching you talk.
Let’s get real here: I’m totally down for a 10-minute workday. I’d be an idiot not to be. But, being the Gemini fickle-bitch that I am, I’m once again considering a client service-based business.
THIS SIDE HUSTLE IS FOR YOU IF…
You love to write but don’t want to be bothered or don’t feel comfortable finding or working with clients
