Right around the time I made the decision to go Aw Natural with my healthcare, I made the decision to do the same in my home. To be honest, it hasn’t been easy. In fact, it’s been a slow process replacing toxic-laden products with natural products. Natural products that actually work, that is.
I read about Meliora Cleaning Products in a blog post about, well, natural cleaning products. I was intrigued when I discovered that it was founded by a woman, a scientist no less, so I did some recon. They’re a relatively new company, established in 2013 and #alltheingredients are certified by MADE SAFE. This means their products are made
“without known carcinogens, behavioral, reproductive, and neuro toxins, hormone disruptors, heavy metals, pesticides, insecticides, flame retardants, toxic solvents, or harmful VOCs and more. It also means that product ingredients have been examined for concerns for whether they build up in the environment or our bodies, and for general and aquatic toxicity.”
That’s pretty impressive. I wanted to try them out and was admittedly hesitant to try the laundry powder. In general, my experience with laundry powder has not been that great. It’s never dissolved easily in cold water. I would find clumps on my wet clothes. And it would leave a residue on dry clothes.
I didn’t have any of those problems with Meliora.
It cleaned our clothes great and despite the fact that it’s unscented, there was still a “clean” scent to my clothes. The one thing that both me and Babendude didn’t like was the powder formula itself. You scoop it up and get a whiff of that stuff…it’s strong! You don’t want to get your face too close.
I would totally jump back on this bandwagon if/when they come out with a liquid formula.
Side Note: I contacted Meliora and asked if they were planning on making liquid laundry or dishwashing soap. Kate—as in Kate Jakubas, Founder—responded the next day:
“We get a lot of requests for dishwashing products and we are actively working to introduce a powder or tablet dishwashing product soon. However, we are not currently planning to over any of our products in liquid form – we are a bit shy of using liquids for 3 main reasons. 1) powders tend to be more concentrated, which means a lower environmental footprint for the same amount of product uses, 2) powders can use paper as packaging and avoid single-use plastic tubs, and 3) liquids require a preservative ingredient in order to stay safe from contamination by bacteria, molds, etc. None of these 3 items is impossible to work around, but we have not found it to be worth investing the time and research into finding an eco-friendly plastic, a safe preservative, and so on when it’s much simpler to just make a powdered product.”
Learn something new every day. I will definitely be keeping a lookout for that dishwashing tablet/powder.
